Rimac Achieves Guinness World Record for Fastest Speed in Reverse Driving

In a thrilling and unconventional feat, Rimac’s electric Nevera hypercar has achieved the Guinness World Record for the fastest speed ever recorded while driving in reverse. The test took place at the Automotive Testing Papenburg facility in Germany, which is the same location where the Nevera broke 23 world records in a single day earlier this year.

During the record attempt, Rimac test driver Goran Drndak bravely took the wheel of the Nevera, engaged reverse gear, and focused his attention on the rear-view mirror. With a firm press on the accelerator, he unleashed the remarkable performance capabilities of the electric hypercar, demonstrating that electric motors are equally adept at propelling a vehicle forward or backward.

A representative from Guinness World Records was present to officially validate the achievement. The final recorded top speed in reverse was an astonishing 171.34 mph (275.74 km/h). This surpasses the speed achieved by the V12 Lamborghini Miura, which held the title of the world’s fastest car in 1972 when it reached top speeds while driving forward.

It is truly amazing how Drndak managed to maintain control of the $2-million-plus Nevera while driving in reverse at nearly three times the speed of a typical highway. The car’s aerodynamics and cooling systems are not designed for such maneuvers, and even the slightest steering error could have led to disastrous consequences.

In a press release, Drndak expressed the challenges he faced during the record-breaking attempt. He described the sensation of watching the scenery fly past backwards at an increasingly rapid pace, feeling the pull on his neck similar to the sensation experienced under heavy braking. Drndak navigated the track with utmost precision, carefully monitoring the rear-view mirror for his course and braking points, while also maintaining awareness of the speed. Despite the unconventional nature of the feat, the Nevera performed flawlessly and effortlessly secured yet another record for Rimac.

The video footage of the record-setting run showcases the remarkable achievement. Following the record, Drndak celebrates with an exhilarating display of 360-degree spins and a smoke-billiowing power drift that demonstrates the raw power and agility of the Nevera. It is an extraordinary accomplishment that definitely warrants celebration.

Rimac’s achievement underscores the innovation and performance capabilities of electric vehicles. The Nevera’s record-breaking speed in reverse is a testament to the technological advancements in electric motor technology and further solidifies Rimac’s position as a leader in the electric hypercar market. This feat will undoubtedly inspire other manufacturers to continue pushing the boundaries of what electric vehicles can achieve.
