As concerns grow over the environmental impact of single-use plastics, South Korea is emerging as a regional leader in the adoption of biodegradable and compostable packaging alternatives. Major super chains and food service companies are rolling out new sustainable packaging initiatives across the country.
Rise Of Bioplastics In South Korea Biodegradable Packaging
Bioplastics, which are made from renewable plant-based materials like cornstarch, sugarcane, or wood pulp, have seen a rapid increase in usage in South Korea in recent years. Domestic bioplastic production has expanded to meet the growing demand. In 2021, South Korea became the fourth largest producer of bioplastics worldwide, producing over 150,000 metric tons annually according to reports.
Major brands have introduced bioplastic options for things like bags, food containers, cups and cutlery. E-Mart, the largest super chain, rolled out biodegradable bags at all locations in 2020. Coffee chain Café Bene also made the switch to bioplastic cups and lids for all drinks. Manufacturers like Kaneka have worked with food companies to develop bioplastic film, trays and clamshell containers that can be industrially composted.
South Korea Biodegradable Packaging : Advancing Compostable Alternatives
While bioplastics still take a long time to break down, compostable alternatives that use materials like paper, bamboo or bagasse can degrade within a matter of months in commercial or home composting. The Korea Federation of Environment Movement NGO reports that the use of compostable food packaging has doubled over the past five years in South Korea.
CoffeeChain, a popular café brand, began providing paper cups in 2018 that can break down in commercial composting facilities. Convenience store chain GS25 rolled out compostable paper cups, cutlery, plates and hot cups nationwide the same year. Hotel chain Lotte Hotels switched to using compostable paper bags, cups and takeout containers at their food outlets. These initiatives were aided by the opening of industrial-scale composting facilities that can process food waste along with compostable packaging.
South Korea Biodegradable Packaging : Government Support And Regulations
The growth of biodegradable packaging in South Korea has benefited from supportive national policies and regulations. The Ministry of Environment introduced the “Korean Ecolabel” certification for compostable food serviceware in 2017. Products that pass testing for biodegradation and heavy metal content can prominently display the ecolabel logo.
In January 2022, a nationwide ban on select single-use plastics like thin shopping bags, cups and food containers took effect. Styrofoam takeout boxes and cups were prohibited earlier in 2021. Additional levies on plastic bags encourage consumers to opt for reusable bags or paper options. These restrictions helped create demand that local companies are moving to fill with compostable paper and bioplastic substitutes.
Challenges Remain For Full Adoption
While South Korea has quickly established itself as a center for bioplastics innovation and commercial composting infrastructure, some challenges remain before biodegradable alternatives can completely replace traditional plastic packaging. According to waste experts, more large food corporations and retailers need to participate for a meaningful reduction in environmental impacts.
Widespread public education is also still needed regarding proper disposal of compostable packaging. Many consumers mistakenly place compostable items in regular trash bins. Improper disposal can prevent complete biodegradation. Strategies to expand and optimize the industrial composting process will further support the domestic composting . With continuing collaborative efforts across industries and sectors, South Korea’s leadership on sustainability packaging looks poised to engender broader change in Asia and worldwide.
