Digital Film Roll Revolutionizes Analog Cameras, Bringing Old Classics to the Digital Age

In an era dominated by advanced digital cameras, analog cameras have long been considered relics of the past. However, Italy’s Samuel Mello Medeiros is determined to change that perception. Back in 2018, Medeiros introduced a digital back for classic film cameras on Kickstarter, followed by a second-generation version in 2020. Now, he and his team are back with their latest innovation: the I’m Back Film, a high-quality digital film roll.

The concept behind the I’m Back Film technology is to combine the nostalgia of film photography with the convenience of digital technology. The I’m Back Film functions like a traditional film roll, but instead of containing film, it houses a 20-megapixel Four Thirds CMOS sensor from Sony. This ingenious device allows old analog cameras to come out of retirement and enjoy the benefits of digital imaging.

One notable feature of the Sony sensor used in the I’m Back Film is its 12-bit digital output capability. This enables the sensor to efficiently read signals from its 21.27 million effective pixels at a high-speed rate of 27.27 frames per second in still picture mode. Despite the sensor’s smaller size compared to a full-frame sensor, the I’m Back Film team has found a solution to offer 35-mm-format full-frame imagery potential. They have designed a simple wide-angle adapter that attaches to the front of any lens on the analog camera, ensuring stunning image quality.

The latest version of the I’m Back Film is sleeker and more compact than its predecessors. It features a 1.5-inch LCD panel, a microphone and speaker, an onboard battery, and built-in Wi-Fi for seamless wireless transfer to a mobile device for editing or sharing. Additionally, a companion app is available to enhance the user experience. Raw or JPEG format digital images captured with the I’m Back Film are stored on SD card media, allowing for easy access and organization.

Currently, the I’m Back Film is in the working prototype phase of development. To bring this innovative product to production, the team has launched a Kickstarter campaign. Backers can pledge CHF 639 (~US$710) or more to secure their own I’m Back Film unit. With the campaign already funded, shipping is estimated to begin in July 2024.

The I’m Back Film has the potential to revolutionize the world of analog photography. By combining the nostalgic appeal of film cameras with the advancements in digital technology, this device offers a unique and exciting experience for photographers. Whether it’s capturing beautiful landscapes or documenting precious moments, the I’m Back Film opens up a world of creative possibilities for analog camera enthusiasts.
