Singapore Startup Accelerator (SA)Fostering Innovation And Entrepreneurship

Over the past decade, startup accelerators have emerged as an influential force in tech entrepreneurship globally. By providing mentorship, funding and networking opportunities to early-stage startups over the course of an intensive program, accelerators help launch the next generation of innovative companies. Singapore has embraced this model with the Singapore Startup Accelerator (SA) leading the way.

Launched in 2012, SA is a government-backed accelerator that aims to support high-potential startups from around the world. With a mission to foster innovation and entrepreneurship, SA gives selected startups access to capital, business guidance and exposure to potential customers and partners. This helps drive the growth of the Singapore startup ecosystem while also putting the city-state on the map as a hub for digital innovation in Southeast Asia.

Nurturing Early-Stage Startups

SA accepts up to 20 startup teams per cohort into its three month accelerator program. The selected startups receive a funding of up to S$50,000 in exchange for 7% equity in most cases. Through an intensive curriculum, SA offers mentorship fromexperts, access to facilities and networking events. The goal is to take startups that are still in the ideation or prototype stage and help them launch minimum viable products.

A key focus of SA is helping international startups gain exposure to the Asian. With mentorship from entrepreneurs and corporate leaders based in Singapore, Singapore Startup Accelerator (SA)startups learn how to customize their offerings for Southeast Asian customers, explore partnerships and distribution channels in the region. For many international founders, SA serves as a launching pad into the vibrant Asian techfrom their Singapore base.

Driving Tech Innovation In Southeast Asia

Over the past decade, SA has accelerated over 270 startups from 30 countries. Successful alumni include video social network Vidyard, cross-border payments platform Transfer To and live video broadcasting platform Riffsy. Combined, SA alumni have raised over $700 million in follow-on funding and created thousands of jobs. This demonstrates how SA is catalysing the growth of innovative tech companies focused on solving real problems.

Besides core programs, SA also organizes events and workshops open to the wider startup community. Flagship events such as Switch conference and Boot camp @SAE have brought together tens of thousands of entrepreneurs, founders, investors and mentors. This fosters collaboration and idea-sharing across the broader ecosystem. SA also launched vertical programs including Smart Energy and Logistics to support solutions development in priority sectors identified by the Singapore government.

Through initiatives like Startup SG Equity, SA has worked with co-investment partners to mobilize up to $150 million for local early-stage startups. It has also partnered accelerator networks globally via programs like Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART) to scout for the best ideas internationally. These efforts bolster Singapore’s position as the top accelerator destination in Southeast Asia and put the spotlight on innovative startups from the region.

Propelling Growth With Government Support

As a leading government-backed accelerator, SA has played a pivotal role in implementing Singapore’s national startup strategy. It works closely with government agencies like Enterprise Singapore and Infocomm Media Development Authority to align programs with national priorities. With strong support from the public sector, SA received a budget of $50 million when it was launched in 2012.

Due to its proven track record of facilitating entrepreneurship and high-growth ventures, SA secured another S$100 million in funding from the government in 2021. This underscores Singapore’s commitment to establishing a vibrant startup culture and creating well-paying jobs through digital innovation and enterprise. The renewed funding will allow SA to expand programs, scale its global network of partners and scout for even more promising startups globally.

Looking Ahead
